Simon and Garfunkel once famously sang “I am a rock, I am an island”.

It’s a great song, but it simply isn’t true! For whatever reason, we all seem afraid to ask for help, even from those closest to us, regardless of whether we need or deserve it.

There’s something in our society that seems to dictate that we have to do it all ourselves – either a perception that we’ll be seen as weak, or just simply .

This, however, doesn’t seem to be true of successful people. They haven’t bought into the fallacy that asking for help is wrong. They know the truth – that great things are achieved when people co-operate.

Think about it the other way around. The last time someone asked you for help, how did you feel? Did you feel imposed upon? Did you think they were weak, stupid or lazy? Of course not! I’ll bet you took it as a compliment, or even felt honored to be asked! Assuming that you’re no different from the rest of us, how do you think others will feel when the roles are reversed? If you ask someone for help, they will almost certainly respond positively and see it as a compliment.

Imagine yourself in this position for a moment. You’ve been working hard on a project for a long time, on your own. You’ve hit a wall and you feel you can’t get any further. You feel frustrated and stuck in a rut, having tried everything you can think of – except ask for assistance.

If you’re soldiering on alone, then you may have reached the point where you’re all out of options but, if you’re willing to ask for help, there’s a whole world of possibilities out there. You’ve heard the expressions ‘fresh eyes’ and ‘two heads are better than one’, so why not follow their advice?

We all have different skill-sets, knowledge and experiences. Each person you know is a whole new set of untapped reference material and expertise and, to get hold of it and use it, all you have to do is ask them. People are rarely unwilling to assist – it’s in our nature to be part of communities.

A good example I sometimes use in seminars is to pick a delegate at random and ask them how many people they know, in total. The usual answer is somewhere between 200 and 500. For the sake of this illustration, let’s select the lower figure and call it 200. Then I ask the person how many people each of those people know. On the assumption that they have similar-sized circles, they almost certainly know at least 200 people each. On this basis, the people within one degree of separation for a person who knows 200 people is a staggering 40,000 people – can you imagine the size of that experience and knowledge pool?

Looking at it this way, giving your friends, family and colleagues the opportunity to help you opens your resource bank to literally thousands of people. That’s a whole army of potential volunteers all waiting to be complimented!

A great example of this in practice is listening to friend saying ‘I’m looking to buy a used motorbike’; ‘I need to find a new dentist’ or ‘I need a babysitter for Saturday’ – just normal conversational statements. A couple of hours later you might find yourself in a different conversation and saying “Hang on, Sarah said she needed a babysitter for Saturday night if your daughter is looking to make a little extra money for her vacation. Get her to give Sarah a call, and I’m sure she’d to have her mind the kids!” This is networking in action – how your social circle can help each other for mutual benefit.

As people, we naturally tend to keep things private but, if you share your needs, , dreams and challenges with others, you give them the opportunity to be a part of your . So, the next time you need help, don’t suffer in silence. Pick up the phone, or mention it to a friend. You’ll be pleasantly amazed at what you can achieve together.

1. Know your outcome.

Be specific with what you want. Understand clearly what it looks like, feels like, and sounds like.

2. Take Action.

Each and every day do a little bit to move towards your outcome. Even if it is 1 thing you, have moved 1 step closer than the day before. The reason why so many people never have success is that one day they stop taking action.

3. Have sensory acuity to notice what’s working and what’s not working.

People tend to either say they achieved something or failed at something. This way of thinking does nothing other than set you up for failure. There is no way you can get everything right all of the time. So when something doesn’t go right, do you stop, quit, give up? What if instead you thought like this, ‘there is no failure, only feedback’. Then you can notice what is not working for you and the way you do that particular thing.

4. Have behavioural flexibility to make changes as required. If something is not working for you I guess we have two options. Quit or change the way we are currently doing things. Unfortunately to many people can’t or in fact aren’t willing to change their behaviour and therefore they think the only option is to quit. Those people who can release that something is not working and change their behavior accordingly continue on the path forward to achieving their outcome.

5. Operate from a physiology and psychology of excellence.

Whatever your outcome is complete all the previous steps with an ecology of goodness. I ask myself is it 1.
Good for me?
Good for you?
Good for the greater good?

If I can answer all of those with a yes then I know I’m operating from a physiology and psychology of excellence. So let’s complete a little exercise right now that is easy and effortless to do.

1. Choose an outcome that you would like to achieve in the next day, week or month.
Write the outcome in moving towards language. For example ‘I will …..

2. Create a list of 5 things that if you took action on these things would get you closer to your goal.

3. After you complete the first 3 actions, evaluate what has taken place and add more action steps to the outcome or change the current action steps because they are no longer relevant.

4. Ensure you have behavioural flexibility to change if required. Remember there is no failure here just feedback and therefore you need to monitor and adjust

5. Ask yourself when I complete this outcome is it good for me, good for others and good for the greater good?

This is not about your achievements or your prowess – in fact it’s not even about you it’s why they should be led by you. 5 Write down your personal values — the things you stand for — and refine the list to your most important “top five”. These may or may not align with the organisational values but they must be the things that you truly believe in and are willing to fight to uphold.

6 Every week, and preferably every day, list what you’ve done. Job 1 is your basic job description. Job 2 is finding a better way of doing Job1. Your Job 2 list is, in fact, what the organisation is employing you to do as a leader. If your Job 1 dominates you’re not doing the right thing.

7 Find a way of recording what you’ve learned that helps you be a better leader. This could be a realisation of a way of working that you decide to change or a more formal piece of . If you don’t learn and adapt you’ll be out of a job.

8 Develop ways of communicating the big picture and progress measures to help people see where they are on the journey towards your desired end result. There will always be some doubts, rumours and miscommunication. The more they hear it directly from you the less likely the message will be lost.

9 Make it really clear to people whether or not they have a say or vote in processes and outcomes. Is this a decision you have already made. Do you want information so that you can make a better decision or are you giving them a share in the decision-making role?

10 Help people understand the need for change and encourage them to question and challenge as a way of working out for themselves if they want to be part of it. At the same time do not accept passengers or prisoners. If you can’t change the people — change the people.

Is It Time To Hire An Assistant?

The transition from a one person to a 2 person is a very large step.

After you have grown to the 20 employee stage adding one more employee is easy, but doubling your workforce from one to two is a game changer.

Often the biggest issue is in your head. Do you see yourself with employees or are you scared to grow your business to that stage?

In the Spring 1996 issue of The Review, (Organizational Consultant and author of and the New Science: About Organization from an Orderly Universe) wrote an article about the hidden intelligence orchestrating and organizing all things in the Universe.

In this article one of the things she points out is that who we are with others, or who we are in community, is different than who we are when alone. She stated, “You cannot understand the power of the individual by assessing or understanding who they are when alone.” In our individualistic, lone-ranger society, this is a revolutionary concept!

To understand who someone is and the powers they possess, you have to look at them when in community and in relationship with others! Our gifts are designed for, and come forward, in the presence of others! Margaret further pointed out that “none of the personality assessors or indicators (e.g. ) let us know who or what we are capable of being when we are in community with one another.” We are mistaken if we think we can understand what an individual is capable of by looking at them only when alone.

I almost always experience this phenomenon when presenting to or leading groups. Things I say and do are often emergent, in the moment, and something I’ve never said or done exactly that way before. Often someone will ask “Can you say that again?” and I’ll be at a loss for saying it exactly the same way I just said it BECAUSE it was a channeled moment of non-thinking coming forth in the presence of others – not something I consciously and intentionally assembled in advance. Another interesting aspect of this emergent capacity when in groups is that people will come up to me and say “What you said was so perfect for me – it was spot on for what I am dealing with in my life right now.” This happens when I am in THEIR presence. I could never have planned that in advance by myself.

Margaret provides a great example of 20-foot tall termite towers on the Australian savanna. When entomologists study the individual termite what they find is they are only capable of digging dirt piles. However, these 20 foot towers are amazingly complex feats of engineering, built on a north-south axis, with tunnels and arches inside designed to move air into a darkened interior where it is cooler. “The nests are also designed to move moisture in so the termites can farm a form of fungi they require for digestion. These are very sophisticated structures.”

Entomologists looked for years for the leader, for the engineer, for the “brains” behind the operation. But they never found one. What they found when they looked closer was an emergent capacity in the termites that was only present when in community. If you looked just at an individual termite, all you saw was that they could dig. But when they got together, new capacities for building began to emerge. “Isolated, they barely have any significance. But as a coordinated group they perform like a hive-mind. Like neurons, they emit chemicals for communication… they’re very tuned in… and they respond.”

The main take-away is to realize that your capacities are different when you’re alone vs. when you’re with others. Choose wisely the company you keep!

Entrepreneur Tips – Crossing The Finish Line

Confession time…I decided to run a 5K for all the wrong reasons. My daughter’s boyfriend is a jock, my daughter isn’t. He wanted to run with her and she couldn’t. When I saw a sign at our gym for the new class “How to Train and Eat for a 5K” I saw it as an opportunity for her to start running. Sammi wouldn’t do it alone so to help her we both joined the class.

This was a huge step for me because, although I work out regularly, I’ve always been a firm believer that I could not run. I knew it was painful and horrible. Besides, just running to the corner would leave me breathless. It’s amazing what you do for your kids or so I said at the time.

The class was great because it gave us a and gave us a to teach us how to run so that we could make continual progress without getting hurt. But the most important piece was that we had each other.

Day by day our runs got longer. I found that the more we ran the more it became my personal goal and I was not doing this just for Sammi. I started to feel an immense sense of satisfaction with every mile I ran.

Training was a challenge. Sometimes we ran together, other times we had to run alone. There were days when I’d go out and have a lousy run but the thing was that I didn’t let those days stop me. I just said, “Okay, today wasn’t a good day, I’ll run again tomorrow and it will be better.”

Exactly ten weeks after our first class Sammi and I ran and finished a 5K. We got to the finish line in 36 minutes and 28 seconds. This is not exactly Olympic time but it was our time. We ran our own race, at our own pace, and we got to the end.

As I look back on this experience I am amazed at how much I’ve grown. Sure I can run further but that is the least of it. I’ve tested myself and came out a winner. I certainly challenged my body but the only way I was able to meet that challenge was by challenging my mind.

Every day in our we face challenges. We face things that we know are painful and horrible; things that leave us breathless. In retrospect I realize that there were 5 keys (5K!) that brought me to my goal, how can you apply them to you and your .

1. Create a support network. You can’t do it yourself. Get a coach or a , enlist a friend or colleague to help you. Other people know things or can see things that you don’t which will make everything easier.

2. Take it a step at a time. You won’t get to the finish line immediately. Take your time, go at your own pace. Take the steps that you need to take to achieve your goal.

3. Have a plan. Know your goal and have a general understanding of what steps you need to take to make it happen but keep your focus on the immediate next step.

4. Don’t worry about other people. You’re in it for yourself. It’s okay if someone else is faster, slower or doing it differently than you. It’s okay if someone else doesn’t have your dream…after all if they had the dream it would be theirs and not yours!

5. There are days when things won’t go right. Pick yourself up. Dust yourself off. Redirect your efforts, get going and remind yourself of your goal.
